Culture of violence

If plan X fails to materialize then…= Violence

Kenya is gradually becoming a nation famed for violence. In an election,

If one of the candidates loses, then the results are declared unfair with ‘rigging’ becoming the new vocabulary. What follows next can only be described as post-election violence, whose effects I need not mention as we have seen in the past.

If a football team fails to score, then the heat is turned onto the opponents, with all manner of adjectives being hurled at the referee for poor judgment. Massive destruction of property equalizes the equation with hooligans breaking all facilities within the stadium and involving other innocent motorists and pedestrians on the road.

If a misguided politician fails to achieve whatever he targeted, the best way to let the world know how he feels is to mobilize vulnerable youths to the streets and showcase poor leadership in form of riots that brings city businesses to a standstill, in the name of representing the youths! I fail to understand which youths are represented in this case. If that is what representing the youths means, then I would rather be grouped with the old generation who are not represented. I dare term that as foolishness of the highest order.

If students feel that the school administration is being unfair to them, they resort to violence and burning down the school facilities including their own dormitories as a way to get even. This, they do without humanity irrespective of whether it will cause the deaths and injuries of their own colleagues.

If a domestic misunderstanding ensues between couples, then the best solution is to solve by committing domestic violence on the alleged spouse. Of late, this domestic violence has been upgraded to murder. I see at least a case of a husband who has killed his wife or vice versa in the newsroom almost daily.

Violence, violence and more violence is slowly taking toll in our country. Soon Kenyans shall need no identification Cards in foreign countries. One would only need to portray a violent nature in any country of the world as the identity for being Kenyan.

Violence is as old s mankind only the nature and magnitude differs over time. What is going on simply reflects untamed human nature.

We are born to be tamed by our parents to become responsible members of the society. What’s going on at the moment? Parents are too busy for their children. Instead we send them to the best schools or churches hoping the teachers or Pastors will take over our role.

Househelps, the net, peers, and all other forms of media have taken over our role as parents. We have raised a generation that has no sense of humanity. No one is ready to take responsibility for his/her actions. Do we have to continue this way?

I pray this generation learns from our mistakes and reverse this trend of violence. When God blesses you with children, take time to not only raise them but ensure you tame them.

Marriage in African society was never treated as an individual or personal affair. Every member of the clan got involved in sorting out marital problems and making sure the couple is reconciled before things get out of hand. No marital conflict could be left to reach the level we see today.

Now, most of us think we are too sophisticated and can handle our family or love issues alone. What has happened now that the clan stepped in the late Wanjiru’s case? The mother in-law and Triza are now reconciled.

We can not be smarter than our ancestors. They may not have acquired the level of education we have but they were wise enought to cme up with measures that ensured stability in our families. Let’s be proud of our roots; discard what is archaic but uphold all that adds value to us.
